MOD EDIT: Sony's Response

"We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience," Sony said in a statement to the BBC. "With ... more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we've built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms," Sony stated. "We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point."Click to expand...

Sony chiefs are under pressure to respond to complaints about "cross-play" restrictions imposed on Fortnite.

Gamers have discovered that if they had first played the title on a PlayStation console, they are unable to use the same Fortnite account with the newly released Nintendo Switch edition.

This prevents them from being able to make use of outfits and other in-game purchases and rewards they had accrued.

There is no such limitation when moving between the Xbox One and Switch.

Gamers were already unable to share a Fortnite account between Microsoft and Sony's platforms.Click to expand...

Players of the popular survival game Fortnite are complaining to Sony that they cannot use the same accounts on different consoles.

Gamers are frustrated because they can't transfer their accounts between the PS4 version of the game to the Nintendo Switch, a ban which some have accused Sony of making to undercut the success of its rival.

Many have argued that the Switch, as a mobile console, appeals to a different market segment than the PS4 and note how Microsoft has made no such ban for Xbox-based accounts.Click to expand...

  • Players have expressed anger over a so-called cross-play issue with "Fortnite" which doesn't allow them to use an account associated with a Sony PlayStation 4 to play the game on the Nintendo Switch.
  • This means progress and in-game purchases on "Fortnite" on the PS4 can't be carried over to the Switch.
  • Sony shares fell 2 percent.

Sony Mired in Controversy in 'Fortnite' Nintendo Switch Debacle

Sony is in deep trouble with gamers, and things only appear to be getting worse.

The game company is facing backlash from PlayStation 4 players who are disappointed that they can't access their PlayStation 4 accounts for the wildly popular battle royale game Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch. Sony has decided to block those players from cross-play or being able to access and sync their gamer accounts between consoles. That means that all of the progress, purchases, and other content on PlayStation 4 Fortnite accounts won't be accessible on the Nintendo Switch or Xbox One.

Fortnite players aren't satisfied with Sony's response to the PlayStation-Nintendo Switch controversy

After facing a wave of backlash, Sony issued a response on Thursday to its controversial decision to bar Fortnite accounts on PlayStation from being used to play Fortnite on Nintendo Switch, a problem that Fortnite players on Xbox won't face if they want to play the game on the Switch.

Many players, however, feel Sony didn't adequately address the issue.

It's irritating how MS are planting the seeds for this backlash only for their own gains and pretend like they're doing it for the gamer.
Would it be better for PS players to be put in a pool with PC and other console's players? Yes there are some advantages. Can I understand why Sony don't want to do it? Yes.
Overal I don't understand this obaession with crossplay and why people think that Sony should chuck away one of their huge advantages they have over the competition.

This isn't about crossplay exactly. This is about your account being held hostage by Sony.

Fortnight is a free to play game. So if you have two devices you can play on both of them using your same account, so if you want to play on your laptop or switch for example while on the road. And came back to play on your PS4, your account is now locked to your PS4 and can't be used anywhere else. So any progression or purchases (which might be the main reason Sony is doing this) is locked on your PS4. Which is battleship.

This would be more like signing into your email on a playstation, only to find out that you can't sign into it anywhere else afterwards.
Even when your email isn't signed into it.

Yeah that sucks. If you made an account on PS4 then it would be somewhat acceptable. But if Sony is allowing you to login from another account made on another device then Sony should allow you to use that account on other devices.
I think the issue with Sony is that the game has in-game purchases. Since it's free-to-play then Sony want to make money on in-game purchases. Not allow gamers to purchase srstuff elsewhere and then use their system to play the game.

"We're hearing it. We're looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

I can understand from a business perspective the money thing, but honestly they just need to stop being babies and let cross play with fortnite and minecraft happen with MS and Nintendo.

Sony needs to follow Microsoft and figure out a crossplay system that helps them.

Make it something like forcing people to have ps+ on xb1 to play with ps4 gamers. That'd be annoying for gamers and would not be supported by Microsoft, but it'd change the conversation.

Or it could be something like needing to buy the crossplay versions of games through PSN. Ie if you play Fortnite on xb1 but against people on ps4, then microtransaction money would go to Sony.

Would not be liked by Microsoft but would put the ball in their court.

Yeah i'm sure they will eventually come up with a solution.  It's easy for MS to do fortnite cross play because you have to have gold to play it anyway.  I wonder if Nintendo will eventually put Fortnite behind their own paid online service.

And more to the point, most gamers simply don't care. We asked GameTrack - a consumer research project run by Ipsos Connect that is used by many major publishers - to ask its panel of European users how it felt about cross-play, and the responses were indifferent. 58% of respondents said they didn't care much about it. When asked if cross-play was a reason to buy a console, 54% disagreed with the statement (in fact, 38% strongly disagreed), while only 13% said it might be a consideration in which console or service they would buy.

48% of respondents disagreed that cross-platform play would be an incentive to buy a game they otherwise might not, versus 17% who agreed; and 49% of respondents disagreed that cross-platform functionality would make them more likely to play online than they currently do, compared to 17% who agreed. The data shows that although there are some gamers that find cross-play intriguing, the majority are simply not fussed.Click to expand...

There has always been this threat of a 'hard reset' whenever a new generation arrives, yet in the future the reset might not be so definitive. PS5 players will likely still be playing with PS4 owners. Friends lists and game libraries will likely transfer across. Enabling customers to switch to Xbox and still allow them to play with their PlayStation friends gives away a big competitive advantage. So why do it, especially if the majority of gamers are not actually asking for it?

Yet for Microsoft, it does make sense. This is a company that wants to knock down console barriers so it can attract people to its platform - and we're not just talking about a physical platform here. It's the challenger brand, so it has less to lose from opening its platform to its competitors and more to gain.Click to expand...

It's quite something to see Nintendo and Xbox unite in such an aggressive and blatant attack on PlayStation. Whether it's a sign of a deeper bond between the two businesses, or a temporary alliance against a common enemy, it's not entirely clear. But it puts Sony in a tricky predicament. If it relents to cross-platform demands, then it's Xbox that will truly win, as it will paint Microsoft as the hero and take away one of the many reasons to own a PlayStation over any other device.

Stick to its guns, and Xbox and Nintendo will continue to paint PlayStation as anti-gamer.

All over an issue that most people don't really care about.Click to expand...
