The Last Guardian needs to be experienced and played by everyone. Delving beyond what we mentioned above is to go into spoiler territory, but we implore you to jump in. Do that and you will most likely shed a tear or feel an emotional pull throughout the whole adventure. While not the most original tale on earth, its execution and its design is close to being perfect.

But the standout game of 2016 will be The Last Guardian, a Japanese-made buddy game about a young boy and a hulking, dog-like creature who together must escape a tumbledown castle. In the pair's movements the game has all the masterly animation of a Studio Ghibli film, but The Last Guardian's true power comes from the way in which a story of trust, companionship and restoration (Trico, as the creature is called, has clearly suffered much abuse at the hands of his captors) is told not through cinematic scenes, but through the game's tactile interactions. If ever there was a story to salve the wounds inflicted by this dark year, this is it.

All round, The Last Guardian feels meticulously pieced together and is easily one of the PlayStation 4's stronger exclusive titles. It's risky and unconventional, flouting modern design practices in a way that few other AAA game would dare to in 2016. Although far from perfect and a little worn from age, it's a one of a kind experience and hopefully won't be the last we see from Fumito Ueda and this enchanting world.

Looking at GAF, there is a wide spread. Eurogamer doesn't give a score, but rated TLG essential. But then, we see Jim Sterling giving it a 6.5/10.

So the main complaints are still the same ones that were leveled against the game at E3 when the first previews popped up: Camera, controls and Tricos "stubborness".

So, its an ICO game...

If you like this type of game then you'll like it, otherwise not.

Sounds good to me.

Oh, boy. Not sure I'm in for this before a patch or before I own a Pro.

Is that why it dropped 2 full points?

82 now. this will end up in the 70'S

Got another 4. Now at 77 on Opencritic. Still at 82 on Meta, but neither of the 4s has been added on there.

That's a bad excuse for them not improving on these known issues.
