but shooting it down will just hurt them. russia themselves wont have gained anything by this, all shooting down a plane would do is make the west pissed off, and they will put in more sanctions and actions in ukraine. making it harder for the rebels. If its the rebels that did it, its the same deal, shooting down the plane will just enrage the other side, making the fight they are already fighting even harder.
Oh and DD, Russia benefit by giving the rebels weapons and equipment. It's been speculated that this was done by the rebels, so indirectly by Russia.
