Title: I need PC advice. Buying a PC for graphics drawing.
Post by: SWORDF1SH on Oct 05, 2016, 04:48 PM
So I know nothing about PCs so I need a bit of advice.

My nephew who is 13 is getting a computer. The budget is £1,000 and he needs to also have a drawing thingy for doing graphics included within the budget. Being 13 it needs to be relatively easy to use. It can either be a home computer or laptop.

Are you wanting to buy something off the shelf or is he interested in building one?

Home computers are usually better if you don't care about portability.

Sounds like it might be best for you to opt for the surface pro 4.

Off the shelf and portability isn't an issue

My sister said she suggested the surface Pro but a friend said not to bother. To be honest her friend probably doesn't know what he's talking about. What would you suggest for the drawing pad?

Well the surface pro 4 is a drawing pad. It comes with a pen and for your budget its the best option out there. Drawing directly on the screen is far better than having a disjointed tablet like a wacom bamboo or something simular.

Wacom tablet pcs start at 1400 and go up from there.

What software would you use for drawing and at what cost?

Sketchbook is nice and photoshop of course.

I got Sketchbook for free with my wacom so i dont know. and i think photoshop is 9 bucks a a month.

Heres a speedpainting and a surface pro to give you a better idea.

I agree on the surface pro option.

What desktop and sketch pad combo would you recommend for £1,000 ( not sure dollar equivalent). And how does it compare to surface pro?

Surface pro is great. Both my siblings have one.

I just mentally read the thread title as graphics AND drawing. If he doesn't care about playing video games, surface pro seems like the way to go.

Surface pro can game. It's just not a graphics champ.

Does it have to be Pro 4 or are older models somewhere near?

3 is the oldest you can go.

But the 4 is superior for drawing.

You need to ask CGI-Quality.

I could do. The more input the better

He'll know better than most. I have to say though, a friend of mine has a few apps on his ipad and they're great, so perhaps that's a decent place for you to start, at least for now ... assuming you have an ipad of course.

My sister is now saying £1400 budget. What can you get with that?

Jesus, man, you really don't need to spend that much.

He doesn't have an ipad, just a budget tablet. He's only 13 but my sister wants to try and encourage his interest and see if it develops a talent I suppose. At the least he'll have a decent computer if it comes to nothing.

That's just too much though, man, seriously. Ask CGI was a good set up and mention a price a third of what that budget is. I would also consider looking into an ipad so he can buy one of those apps.

This is a simple one:

There are better ones.

Procreate seems the best one

lol I'm not the one suggesting the budget. I think she wants to get him a good professional set up, or as professional as you get with the budget.

Take a look at these, both decent the surface book is going to a better all around computer. The companion is going to be the better artist tool.

Buy Refurbished Surface Book - Microsoft Store (https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/productID.4236430600?gclid=CjwKEAjwydK_BRDK34GenvLB61YSJACZ8da39m5dMp9OvoTubrRkkbSzBMvZI5hdi9T-clOY6xgkJhoCrj7w_wcB&VID=4236430700&s_kwcid=AL!4249!3!84410703018!!!g!66568334325!&WT.mc_id=us_datafeed_pla_google&WT.mc_id=pointitsem&WT.mc_id=Surface&ef_id=Vav34gAABR01ZhJh:20161005213250:s)

Cintiq Companion 2 Intel® Core™  (https://us-store.wacom.com/Catalog/pen-displays/cintiq-companion/Cintiq-Companion-2-Intel-Core-S01)

dang you for making me look at this stuff again. Now I really want the one below. Who knows how much it's going to cost but with a built in 3d scanner... on my.

Wacom MobileStudio Pro | Wacom (http://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/pen-computers/wacom-mobilestudio-pro)

Now you can also build a pc that will blow all of this out of the water, but you'll also have to spend another 1000 bucks for a monitor to match the performance of the first two or deal with one of these.

Which I'm sure he'll lose interest in real fast.

I found a nice gaming build, which should leave you enough to get the programs and monitor and the above tablet. I drop the ssd just to save some cash to apply it towards other goodies.

Put me in the surface pro camp.
I haven't actually used one myself, but I know a guy who uses it in math class.  It looks really cool, and seems to work really great for drawing.

Hey, we've actually got quite a bit of PC knowledge here!

I can't say how much better a Surface Pro is for drawing, but the Surface 3 Vanilla is probably the best tablet/price ratio.  Best tablet I've used and is pretty snappy for the x7 that's in there.

I'm glad you asked this on here. I now can't stop watching Procreate drawings on Youtube.

Mmm_fish_tacos,
You mean they have 3d scanning application on board? I've read about it on the software manufacturers site (https://www.artec3d.com/news/3d-scanning-on-wacom-tablet-with-intel-3d-sensor) and I just wonder how is the quality of scanning comparing to they separate scanners.
