The NDS is region-free.

Their reason (or at least hidden reason) for making the 3DS region locked is the same reason why Atlus made Persona Arena region locked so people would not buy games from Japan ahead of western release date.

I don't have a 3DS/Wii U yet, so no Smash for me.

Nah, the DSi was the first region locked handheld, but there were only like 4 (mediocre) DSi games so it wasn't a problem.
