Video from Mat Piscatella, NPD Analyst - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbkjeOT-gdg&feature=youtu.be

Overall

Quote
It looks like a lot of folks treated themselves to a Nintendo Switch for the holidays last month. The video game industry in December was up 10 percent year-over-year, generating $3.29 billion thanks mainly due to hardware sales, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group.
Software

Quote
Software spending was up 1 percent from December 2016, reaching $1.3 billion. After Activision's Call of Duty: WWII's immense month in November, it's unsurprisingly still at the No. 1 spot on the charts.

"Call of Duty: WWII was the best-selling game in December, as well as for the year," said Piscatella. "December 2017 is the eighth consecutive December that a Call of Duty franchise release has topped the sales chart."

Activision Blizzard was the highest earning publisher in 2017, though more folks spent their dollars on Nintendo games in December.
Hardware & Accessories

Quote
Hardware generated $1.3 billion in December, up 27 percent year-over-year and driven mainly by the Switch. As previously mentioned, it became the best-selling console in its first 10 months.

[...]

"Over the first 50 months in market for each console, the combined hardware installed base of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now exceeds that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by 18 percent, and that of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox by 4 percent," said Piscatella.

[...]

Despite the growth in software and hardware, the accessories category remained largely unchanged year-over-year. It earned $735 million in December, with consumers shifting their focus from "toys-to-life" (such as Nintendo Amiibo) to cases and organizers.

The only info until now.

So how has he spun this because I think he has to be talking about revenue and excluding the Switch to make this statement likely.

That tweet doesn't make any sense?

They've won previous Decembers yet if they won this year they would have said that.

Cute Pikachu

Switch probably won. Retail insiders flat out said that Switch was leading comfortably in December. My guess is it was close with PS4 and he is only counting that.

Probably.

I don't think there's any way in heck that they outsold the Switch and PS4 combined.

I could maybe believe console revenue, especially with the Xbox One X.  Even then, it's kinda hard to believe, if they're including switch.

Uhhh what does that even mean? Xbox One highest xbox family console share? ;D

Well its impossible they're including Switch in that anyway, since including Switch would probably give Xbox One its lowest market share ever in December. If I was to bet, they're excluding Switch and talking revenue. Since X is so expensive and the Pro was on offer its not surprising they set a new revenue share record vs. PS4

Man did I miss the spin

SW > XB1 > PS4

SW > XB1 > PS4
He is excluding switch as gen 8 from that it seems. Not sure if he is talking about revenue or not.

It was probably a statistical tie with the Xbox in the +5% range.  Enough to say it outsold the PS4, but not enough to say "We conclusively outsold the PS4".  Since NDP could be wrong with their stats slightly and the PS4 could possibly have outsold the Xbox One + fam.  Either that or Greenberg needs to get fired ASAP cause they're paying him millions of dollars a year to sit at his desk and not understand what his job is.

Leaks from ERA.

[HARDWARE]
SW 100% (base data)
XB1 91%
PS4 72%
3DS 50%
OTHERS 59%

[SOFTWARE]
SW 100% (base data)
XB1 192%
PS4 228%
3DS 54%
OTHERS 50%

Everything in units using the Switch number as base (eg. Switch 100 units, Xbox 91 units, PS4 72 units).

Nobody knows Switch data for hw/sw but it is estimated to be over 1.4m.

Unsurprising PS4 had a bad month in the US. Seems like stock was low for cyber monday and on top of that deals for December seemed pretty bad. Worse than November and the same/ worse than last year isn't a good strategy for unit sales. We knew it would be down anyway since it was down YOY WW for the holiday season while having a better BF week and an amazing November NPD this year.

Xbox got it much more right, with better and more sustained December deals.

Switch is Switch and doesn't need deals right now, simples.

SWORDF1SH

Xbox got it much more right, with better and more sustained December deals.
But MS have put themselves in this position where they have to run these deals. Sony is way more smarter because they won't see a massive dive in sales going into the year which MS will probably get with the Xbox.
