October 27, 2014- In a world where smartphones and tablets are on their way to become the most popular and dominant gaming platforms, there doesn't seem to be much room for dedicated gaming machines anymore, especially when it comes to portable systems. However, analyst Sebastian Kramer from market research firm NTH* makes a compelling case for why handhelds can still be important.

"I am of the opinion that Microsoft should make a handheld. Not so much because it is a potentially lucrative market (it isn't), but rather because it will improve the perception of Microsoft's support for their home consoles. Word is going around that Microsoft's treatment of the Xbox 360 in the later stages of its life is seen as a betrayal and that, regardless of it being true or not, cannot be good for the image of the Xbox brand. In a broader sense, Microsoft in general has had problems with how they are perceived. They are commonly described as an evil corporation because, well, that is what they are."

These are wise words from a respected analyst, but how exactly is this hypothetical handheld going to help? Kramer elaborated.

"It's simple, really. Look at Sony's PlayStation Vita. Now consider how many developers work under the umbrella of Sony Worldwide Studios. Gamers are aware of how big Sony is. They see that Sony isn't doing anything for their handheld and that generates great confidence in their home console. All those developers must be working on something and if they aren't doing so for Vita, by process of elimination, they are making games for either the PS3 or PS4, or both. But it doesn't stop there."

Readers, be prepared for an eye-opening revelation.

"The power of perception should never be underestimated. Despite leaving the Vita to die, Sony's game output for the PS4 to date has been, quite frankly, absolute basket case. Not just in the number of games, but also their quality. In fact, it has been so bad that it makes even Net... Non... that company that makes all the Mario games look good. Regardless, gamers believe that Sony is doing an amazing job. That's why Microsoft has to make their own handheld. Hype it up, launch it, let it die, and watch how people give you immense credit for being all about your home consoles even if you struggle to get games out."

This is certainly some food for thought. Have we been manipulated by Sony all along? What do you think, dear readers?
