Title: The Sporty Sports Thread
Post by: Dr. Pezus on May 02, 2018, 07:49 PM
Sports! Exercise! Bocca! Cricket! You may recognize some of these words. This is a thread where we discuss them. It doesn't matter if you call football soccer or if you just sit on your dog all day, everyone is allowed to post!

3-2! Just two more

Yes. Thankfully klopp is woeful in finals and real Madrid amazing

Wow 4-2 and Roma were robbed of 2 clear pens.

Anyway, final will be fun. Real Madrid definitely favorites but liverpool have shown they can beat most teams on their day.

I think Ronaldo's desire to win will along with nerves from Liverpool will overcome them though

Lol but Roma also got 2 pens which were not pens so it balances out.

I'll be hoping Liverpool can win but we'll see :P

Yeah, in an era when no team managed to win 2 in a row for a long time, Real winning 3 in a row would be crazy. But also Liverpool beating Real Madrid would be crazy too. Should be fun.

Real seems to defy all odds in the CL + they have Ronaldo so I'd bet on them

So Sir Alex Ferguson had brain surgery due to a hemorrhagic stroke. Terrible news and I wish him well.

It would be a horrible time to go, right after that lifeless performance by his former team on Friday.

I have a feeling he'll pull through. Will have to lay off the wine though

He is very good but you have to wonder if the system is making him look like Messi. He wasn't  nearly as good before. I'm amazed that despite Salah's performance liverpool only managed 4th though, and were close to dropping to 5th

The system isn't making him look like Messi, he has very different skills. Yeah, he just clicked at Liverpool, you sometimes see that.

Eh, Liverpool don't have the depth required to do well in the League and Europe, plus their defensive side is extremely weak. They probably have the 2nd best attacking force in the PL, but their defence is mediocre at best. Biggest weaknesses are centre-back and goalkeeper.

Well I meant similarly good as Messi lol. It's not easy to score that much in the PL and to do it in your first season too is mad.

Yeah but at least they improved their defensive side massively with vvd.

I'm afraid they will challenge the league next year if they can keep their front 3.

Also, I really hope Ronaldo turns up in the CL final. I'm sure he will, he doesn't want to risk not winning the Ballon d'or

Yeah, he set a new record for goals in a 38 game season, extremely impressive.

Sure, they went from a disastrous defense to a bad defense :P

I hope so! They deserve it more than the other teams up there.

The final wouldn't be as good if CR7 didn't turn up, that's for sure.

Well I definitely wouldn't say they deserve it more lol. It's not enough to have a great offense. It's not even great in all games either, they had some embarrassing losses and draws, lots of draws. Plus, they had a terrible record against the top 6. Worse than Chelsea even.

Sure they do. They don't have newly bought success from rich new owners, and their owners aren't complete twats.  That pretty much covers all the rest of the top 6 apart from United. But I wouldn't be an English football fan if I didn't prefer Liverpool over United (not counting United/ Everton fans of course). Plus they have pretty much no fake/ plastic fans, which the other tops teams do. Its good to see.

Yeah, that's thanks to their defense. Still the least impressive state from the top 6 this season is Arsenal's 2018 away record, a shame they actually managed to pick up some points on the last day.

Lol well. I admire Tottenham more for their success.

Oh and yeah, first win away in the prem in 2018 for arsenal I believe

It was Wenger's last game though so you'd expect a bit more fire in them.

True, but they fall under the owner is a bag category :P

Spurs and Liverpool are the two top teams I like. The rest I am actively pleased with any of their downfalls.

First away points, lol. Maybe so, but they still lost the game before. And they only won this game 1-0

It's weird because he has seemed quite good lately, but that's perhaps because he hasn't been tested much with their pressure system.

Now when he's getting tested with strong shots and pressure he's bottling it hard

I was thinking they wouldn't need a new keeper and I'm sure there were more. Now I think this game cements the opposite.

I don't know about quite good but he's not made as many mistakes recently at least.

Lol at that, even at his best Karius is a decent bottom half PL goalkeeper. Liverpool need to get a better one anyway.

Yes, as I said he stopped making big mistakes. I watch a lot of Liverpool games, as my flat-mate is a Liverpool fan, and believe me he has still been a poor goalkeeper this season. He's extremely unsure of himself when coming to corners/ crosses, terrible in one-on-ones, has poor communication with his defenders, not so good natural reflexes...

I could go on, but you get the point. I'm shocked actually that he hasn't made more critical errors though, I guess its been Mignolet with those recently.

I've watched a lot too this season because of Fantasy.
He's seemed a decent shot stopper in any case.
Mignolet made loads of errors early in the season, which is why karius got the chance

It's difficult against such a threatening team. We were very threatening in the first half though on the counter. A bit unlucky not to score more then

I noticed the team's defence was solid, it's just hard to push back with that formation.  But it puts up a good wall.

Well Portugal only won the Euro because they changed the rules for them to stay in.  They needed to give something to Ronaldo.  Argentina was supposed to win World Cup last time too (To give something to Messi), but then Germany ended up winning throwing a wrench in Fifa's plan.  I think they'll try to give it to Argentina again.

They don't "fix" matches.  They favour matches.  I vividly remember after Germany won, the commentators were going on and on about Messi and his career.  Not, you know, Germany winning.  Same when Italy won in 06.  Zidane literally cost France the World Cup, and they give him the golden boot?  The president didn't even present the cup to Italy.  Portugal was kicked out of Euro Cup, but conveniently rules got changed before the tournament started and they were let through under these new rules and won.  A team that shouldn't have made it to the next round wins the Euro Cup?  Again, all conspiracy theories, but I do believe the higher ups favour teams and try to get them to win.  Not by fixing, but through favouring.

What on Earth do the commentators have to do with any of this? They have nothing to do with fifa.

And come on now, that team expansion was decided completely independently to Portugal finishing third in their group.

I really don't think they actively try and favour any countries, the only weird thing they do is the world rankings which don't really seem to make much sense.

Good win for Switzerland. Serbia now have to beat Brazil to go through, and if they do then Brazil are out of Swiss avoid defeat against Costa Rica. Going to be a great conclusion to group E, hopefully Serbia can do it!

Nigeria are basically through and knock Argentina out if they can hold them to a draw.

Iran vs. Portugal will be huge, winner goes through and I can see Iran being able to beat Portugal.

This is a great WC. Hopefully Germany fudge up again tomorrow.

My world cup adventure is nearing an end. Currently on a train from Nizhny novgorod to Moscow where I will fly back to Dublin tonight.

It all started in Poland before driving to kalingrad in prussia where I flew onto St petersburg for the Iran v Morocco match.

Next up was Moscow for Germany v Mexico, Poland v Senegal and Ronaldo v Morocco. Finally onto Nizhny Novgorod for Argentina v Croatia. Probably the best trip I've ever been on.

And incase anybody is wondering russia during the WC felt safer then any other country I'd ever been in abroad. Don't believe what the western media tells you. It's all propaganda.

Now looking forward to getting home and enjoying the rest of this WC from my couch.

Crazy to think either Switzerland or Sweden could play a team like Belgium, Senegal, columbia or Japan in a quarter final. I don't include England because I believe they will foolishly try and win the group when they'd be much better off coming second.

Anyway there's a real possibility a really unlikely country will make the semi final.

Ugh I'm annoyed that Southgate made 8 changes for that match. Momentum is gone but you can't really say much else. The formation didn't suit those players, and I don't think any of them made a case to put themselves into the first choice side. Just hope our proper team can perform against Colombia now.

We had one first choice outfield player, hardly a mix.

Stones, dier? Cahill has also been playing quite a bit. So that's 4/11 at least.

Meanwhile Belgium had like 0-1

Lol no fudgy way Dier and Cahill are first choice, they both proved beyond all doubt this game that they're not. Stones was the only one. We had 1, same as Belgium.

Eh then I guess the team hasn't been finalized until very very recently.

Wait, who are the other regular CBs then?

Stones, Maguire and Walker are the three first choice CBs in the 3-5-2 formation. Cahill is probably just short of being selected ahead of Walker.

Yeah but he's being used quite effectively as a CB in the 3-5-2. He's got great pace, which I think one of the 3 needs. Plus he's very good defensively, and can provide some attacking support. It works quite well.

Golden boot race will be interesting. I bet Kane will win but might be hard if they don't go through this round. Belgium will likely go further so Lukaku can have more chances. He usually scores less against top teams though

Yeah I think Kane winning the boot and us getting through will basically be equivalent. If he does win the boot, he's given us goals to help us through. If not, we'll probably get knocked out. And yeah, Kane performs more in the big games. If England and Belgium were to play the same number of games then you'd back Kane to score more every day of the week.

I'm feeling pretty good about Colombia, although naturally I'm quite nervous. I reckon even if they match us on the field, set pieces should give us the upper hand. And apparently we've been properly practising for penalty shoot-outs this year, so it in't a guaranteed loss any more if it comes to that ;D

Yeah Spain have never looked convincing in this WC. I think I'd back Croatia against them. Eh Denmark have been boring, sitting back and defending. Defending well I'll give you that, but I don't want them to get any further. Croatia play better football and have been fantastic so far, so I'm definitely backing them.

Spain need to pick up the tempo and go for it now.

Yeah, 50/50. That was a terrible shootout. Croatia scrape through after a poor performance. If they play like that against Russia it'll be close. If they play like they did in the group stages they'll be fine.

Don't have any hope for England. They always find a way to lose.

This world cup is awesome though. All the "big" teams are getting their asses kicked. Good riddance Germany. And it's great that Portugal are out as well. Spain are boring as fudge and just pass the ball between their midfield and defence so good riddance as well.

Let's just hope France gets knocked out soon and everyone I dislike is out!

Well that's true. That's why I'm very worried. But, there's a positivity around the squad that I haven't seen before. I think Southgate has a good thing going, so we'll see. At the end of the day, we just need to perform to our best against Colombia.

Agreed with all that. As much as I dislike France as an Englishman, they are exciting to watch. However, so are Uruguay and its always great to see Suarez and Cavani play, they're just outstanding, especially for their work rate and commitment. So I'll be rooting for them over France.

Suarez creates a lot and works incredibly hard, Cavani is better though yeah. I was saying to my mate that I'd take either of those two on my team instead of Messi or Ronaldo. It's infuriating watching them stroll around doing absolutely nothing for their team except for when the ball is given to them. I'd take a hard worker over that any day.

So Colombians have started a petition to replay the match, apparently because the referee were biased against them. Wow. This isn't just some people online either, some of their players have come out and said the ref was biased too. So, not only were they the most dirty team I've ever seen play but they're also delusional and sore losers. To think I respected them before this... I hope I never have to watch them again.

Well we did also beat Colombia on pens :P

But yeah, we got lucky, never really played that well. We could have easily gone out in the groups or round of 16 if luck wasn't on our side. I'm encouraged by how far we got, but we still have a lot of improving to do.

We were one of the only teams to properly work on set pieces it seems. That's good, but our open play really was lacking. It was annoying to watch sometimes.

England were average. They were blessed with the easiest run to the final since the 32 team format began. They weren't far off beating Croatia and making the final. I've no doubt France would have won though if they did.

Yeah hard to argue with this. France would have battered us. If we played on the same day and didn't have extra time then it might have been a closer match, but given the circumstances I would have expected France to beat us something like 4-1 in the final. I expect France to beat Croatia 3-1 or 2-1.

His arm was dropping after jumping, which is natural. You can't say for sure it was deliberate, so its not a clear error from the ref and it shouldn't be overturned. Not a penalty.

Croatia have been the better team.

He was a bit unlucky, couldn't gone either way but I understand the penalty. Maybe it wasn't intentional but his hand was way out and moving towards the ball

Naturally lol. I'm sure most English people would prefer Croatia to win now after their loss against them.

Perisic only had one hand out when the ball hit him which makes it look worse and less like a natural movement

Oh yeah if a ref gave that normally I'd be fine with it, even if I think it would be soft. But VAR shouldn't overturn that.

I don't think so, Shearer has just been very vocal and annoyed about VAR whenever it makes mistakes. Most people I know want France to win tbh

Well var didn't make a mistake now, I don't think there's any way to claim that. There's enough reasonable evidence for it to be a pen. I don't think shearer has any reason to be angry lol

However France came through the much harder side of the draw and are worthy winners. They just made up for the humiliation of euro 2016 the best way possible. Favourites to win euro 2020?

Anyway this sports thread has been a great success so far. GG.

Sorry forgot to remind you about the hurling semi final today. Clare were playing galway and they served up a classic ending in a draw even after 20 minutes of extra time. So it goes to a replay next Saturday.

Anyway came on to let you know that tomorrow as in Sunday at 15.30 irish time cork v limerick the other semi final takes place. Should be about 75,000 at the match. Its on rte 2 and sky sports so if you can get a livestream online check it out. I was at the match today but unfortunately can't make tomorrow as I've a match of my own.

So 4/4 English teams in the European finals this year. Not bad! Although I really don't like Arsenal and Chelsea so eh

Indy 500 was pretty entertaining. I hardly ever watch it but this year there were a bunch of crashes in the last few laps and a last second upset.

I had a roommate in grad school that was really into racing.  it was far more interesting when I had someone to narrate the politics of racing but not interesting enough for me to get into it.

felt too much like fantasy football where I'd need to dedicate my life to something meaningless to get anything out of it.
