Black Panther will become the third fastest film ever to hit $500m in the US today, just being out Jurassic World. Its heading for a $66m third weekend, which is an incredible hold of -40% from last weekend. That also already puts it into the top 10 of all time total US gross.

WW it will hit almost exactly $900m after this weekend, $1b will come next week.

Edit: oh and that makes it the #5 MCU film worldwide (#2 domestic already), behind Avengers, Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3 and Civil War. Its already topped the three films of last year. Crazy.

Crazy how US centric it's doing. Number 10 domestic yet number 47 world wide. Rogue One is the only other recent blockbuster to make the majority of its money in America. Will be interesting to see how the release in China changes this.

China is always a guaranteed $100m+ for MCU films, so instead of being a standout it'll just be fairly US centric in the end. If China is big enough it will probably still make more money overseas, like every other MCU film.

Its only happening because this is just a phenomenon in the US, and that's probably due to the large turnout of black people there and the notes the film strikes with them. In the rest of the world, this is just performing a bit better than what you'd expect for a normal, well reviewed MCU film. It's also doing very well in South Korea though, probably because of the scenes shot and based there. The UK is one of the other places where its outperforming Civil War and only short of Avengers, but its not as big as in the US that's for sure.

Still don't think it can make 1.5b? 1b so soon

Interesting that it seems to have fallen quite a bit behind the last jedi now. It was like 1m behind and now it's over 15m behind

TLJ had an incredible week at this point due to christmas holidays. It fell off a cliff after that though, BP should pass it pretty soon.

And no, overseas performance is nowhere near good enough for 1.5b unfortunately. China would have to be unbelievably incredible.

I'm kinda curious how China is going to like it.
From what i understand, China tends to be pretty racist towards black people.  Wonder how that'll factor in.  Hopefully the movie is successful and positive.

BP is tracking above Spiderman, which made about $120m in total. So BP should do well. $1.3bn will be close for sure.

Your Name is getting a live action remake by paramount studios and JJ Abrams is on board.

On another note, the director of the animated version is unhappy with all the praise.  Doesn't like being compared to Miyazaki.

Also this:
Quote
Despite the praise he received, Makoto Shinkai insisted that the film is not as good as it could have been: "There are things we could not do, Masashi Ando [Director of animation] wanted to keep working [on] but had to stop us for lack of money ... For me it's incomplete, unbalanced. The plot is fine but the film is not at all perfect. Two years was not enough

BP ended Sunday with $899.9m worldwide. It will fly past 1bn with China this weekend. Awesome.

It only fell a couple of million short of Avatar's 3rd weekend total in the US too.

Yeah.  I freaking love the movie, but the movie would benefit being a little longer.

China is looking to be an opening weekend of $60-65m for Black Panther which isn't too great. Its likely going to miss $1.3bn worldwide because of that. It will have passed the $1bn mark today though.
