When will sci fi video games start feeling dated?

It's super common for old sci fi books and movies to feel like products of their era, but that hasn't really happened yet with sci fi video games.

So when will that start to happen and which games will be affected?

I haven't played it yet, but Detroit might be one of the early ones. It's set relatively soon so in only a couple decades it'll start feeling like a laughably poor prediction of the future.

The older Civilization games are also already kinda feeling dated. They show the progression of mankind throughout history so it's pretty noticeable when they switch over and start to show futuristic stuff.

The original 2D metroids could maybe feel a bit dated since the environments feel similar to Alien but I'm not sure that really counts.

On a similar note, games have been pretty good at predicting tech advances. Drones have been in games for years unlike sci fi movies which are just now getting them. Smartphones also don't matter much since most sci fi games already gave the player fancy map tech and what not. I think the big things that screw over sci fi games will be advancements in space travel (IE some spaceships will change to have vertical landings and games will care more about having decreased gravity on other planets) and advancements in ground transportation (IE hyperloop/boring company/earth to earth rockets/whatever will make sci fi cities feel way too dated). Also an increasing understanding of the universe will make lots of their fancy tech jargon sound stupid.

I could see non self driving vehicles being extremely outdated in a few decades. I imagine anything being human piloted by default would be considered primitive and dangerous.

Haha that's a good point. Racing games will be fine but things like Cyberpunk or other open world games will need to start including explanations for why driving isn't automated.

Man I can't wait for this future,  roads will be so much safer.

I can't even think of anything to add to the OP, guess I don't play enough sci-fi games. The mmost dated franchise for sure is Star Wars, man that galaxy is so advanced in some ways but hardly at all in others. No smartphones or networks, really?

Yeah they really didn't put much effort into making the Star Wars universe feel realistic. The retconning is done so haphazardly too.

It's weird. The moment in TLJ where Rose is like " there's only one business in the galaxy that makes you this rich, selling weapons to the first order", I was just thinking hold on what the fudge. So you're telling me the first order buys enough weapons to make a galaxy full of rich people. Even less believable, there's no other successful businesses in that galaxy like Google or apple which would be big enough to give someone a casino and betting lifestyle, really? Weird universe they've built for sure.

Plus the first order is obviously building their own weapons. It's not like they're a small movement that needs to rely on the black market. They'd maybe have contracts with a few massive organizations ALA Lockheed Martin or Northrop Grumman but those would essentially be part of the first order anyway. It's not like random people could just get involved and become rich.
