New Gears of War game confirmed by Microsoft | ResetEra (https://www.resetera.com/threads/new-gears-of-war-game-confirmed-by-microsoft.18290/)
This was in the Game Pass news article, and I think this is the first real confirmation we've gotten of a "Gears 5": Sea of Thieves will be the first title available on launch day, March 20th, through the Xbox Games Pass, and that will "follow through with State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3, and the rest of our portfolio," says Spencer. "Not just those games, but our future Halos, our future Gears of War, future Forzas, and other games. Our plan is to launch those to our Game Pass subscribers at the same time they go to retail."Click to expand...

Run me through with a Lancer if old.
So, they gave pc players no reasons to buy their box, and now they gave current owner no reasons to buy their games.
Their first party out put is pretty low. So it might help them in the long run if they can get a high attach rate to the service.
It's like Phil is making fun of their own games
I just want more Viva PiƱata dang nabbit
Not surprised but amused they so blatantly talk about them having endless sequels.
Negative spin, bur to me this speaks to them continuing to lean very heavy, if not heavier on the GaaS route. Get in to the games with this subscription and then spend money on MT's etc.

It's sucky, isn't it?
This move essentially guarantees that every single Microsoft game must have microtransactions and a freemium like financial model.
Basically they are merging everything and treating it like a single "game as a service." You continuously get free updates/expansions/new games that are designed to push whales and dolphins into spending more on microtransactions. Will probably make them lots of money but hopefully it doesn't catch on unless microtransactions become less common.
Did Microsoft forget that they could do single player experiences as well?
Zelda and Mario is on pace to break franchise sales records, Horizon sold very good, God of War will see amazingly well. Why can't they just give it a try?

But the shelf life of these games are about 1 year and profits dramatically drop after the first month. Treating games like a service will keep it profitable for longer and maximise the return with microtransactions.
I'm afraid this is the state we're in because it's a model that can weap huge returns.
The Gears and Halo franchise are quite well suited for this type of model.
But to go back to the story this was taken from, I think this makes Xbox game pass very appealing. Something Sony can counter by letting people download games and also stream with the PS Now subscription.
On a side note, why isn't the PS Now tech used to play demos? It seems like an obvious thing to do and I don't want to download huge demos to play for 5 minutes.

PS Now is really expensive for Sony to host. They will only use it when they are sure the player will give them money. I think it's more about making sure Sony is already a leader in the market for when costs do decrease and it can be used in more ways.
Yeah xbox game pass is a great deal. As long as you average buying at least one Ms game a year, it's cheaper. Only problem is that it's going all in on microtransactions and Ms games have already been really bad at that. If you do care about those things, it's a poor deal. If you don't, then it's a great deal just like Battlefront 2 with its free DLC.

The costs could be passed on to the publishers to play their demos. It could increase software sales.

I loved demos on the ps3 and they sold me on gow3 and heavy rain. However publishers don't do them anymore.
I mean if they don't even bother with downloadable demos, they're probably not interested in paying for streamed ones.

I've played plenty of demos recently. Some even do like full game for an hour

What big games have demos and not just betas?

This is true. I wonder why most publishers don't bother with demos.
Do you think you'll bother with a demo for your game?

I know Fifa and PES always do one but demos are definitely a dying breed.
Demos tend to hurt game sales is why. Statistically at least.
Personally a demo has been more likely to sell me on a game I wasn't expecting than ruin me on a game that I was.

Tomb raider, knack 2, Titanfall 2 are some examples I have tried recently

No way for Cube Royale. I need to release it, not add more work ::)
Maybe for Adventure but I think I'd prefer a full game trail that just gives you an hour to try it out. Not sure if Sony offers those anymore but it'd suck otherwise since demo progress couldn't carry over into the full game. I'd either be forced to design demo specific puzzles, or buyers would be forced to slog through the same puzzles they just solved a few moments ago.

A trial would be good. I think that would be the best option for Adventure.

When PS Now was still Gaikai, David Perry was actually planning to do just this. Have the service be used for advertising. Advertise Call of Duty at IGN for instance, click on the banner and it'd expand and start running a demo of the game. If I recall correctly, Sony even said before the PS4 launched that they were planning to do just that for demos. But I guess the cost for running PS Now is too high. No reason to kill it on PS3 or the T.V.s unless they were losing money. I think they should make a cross licensing agreement with Netflix and add PS Now as a service for a slightly higher cost.
