Will Sony make another handheld? Surely they've learnt enough from PSP and Vita to make a successful device.

They won't. Profits are from software and PSN. Hardware is a huge risk if it fails it bleeds money. Their consoles are successful and a much safer bet, they can focus their software efforts on them and maximize profits.

Plus they know mobile is a much better way to make money than handheld. Much less risk and more reward. I'd be shocked if we ever see a handheld from Sony again. Not like its much of a loss anyway.

But while the Vita had a lot of problems, one of the biggest is Sony didn't push the console. Sony at the time were going through a rough time and the PS3 gave the Playstation name a bashing. Sony couldn't afford to market the console like they should. Today, Sony and PlayStation is going very sstrong. Software and PSN give Sony a lot of profits but it still didn't stop the taking a risk with VR and PS Pro.

At this point, handheld exclusive games are dead. If Sony does make a new handheld, it needs to share its library with PS4/5 as much as possible. Exclusives are important but would cost too much unless the handheld sold a ton.

Remote play is so much nicer for developers but tends to be worse for consumers. The alternative is forcing all developers to make mobile versions of PS5 games which limits PS5. In the middle you could do half in half where games are encouraged to have mobile versions but are only required to be optimized for remote play. Nothing really seems like a good solution.
