No Man's Sky "Path Finder" Content Update announced - NeoGAF (http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1350563)
From their steam community hub (http://steamcommunity.com/games/275850/announcements/detail/501427862946407906).Hello,
This week Hello Games will be releasing the next content update for No Man's Sky. We're calling it the Path Finder Update; it introduces a new vehicle that will aid home planet exploration, building on the Foundation Update to hint at a path ahead for the future.
Detailed patch notes will be released when the update goes live.
Shortly after we launched the Foundation Update, we released a number of patches to address issues reported by players before beginning work on the Path Finder update. We were surprised and excited by the response to Foundation, and we have been listening carefully to community feedback since then.
To those of you who have spent time sharing feedback, whether positive or negative, we are listening.
This is the next step in our journey. It shows the path forward. We hope you'll join us.
Thank you,
Hello Games
I guess land vehicles confirmed?
I'm gonna let this and maybe some other updates come out before I jump back in. Really like the base game, but got too repetitive so looking forward to this hopefully really expanding the game.

Hopefully it adds more than just the buggy. Better procedural generation would be cool.
Man, too little too late.

Yeah if it's just a vehicle that will be disappointing. I'm hoping they can at some point have those huge dinosaurs and cooler animals like at the E3 presentation. I'm not hopeful that much that it will happen though.
Man, too little too late.
Are you forgetting the update prior to this? What about the update after this? Will it be too little too late too?

Short answer? Yes
People are done with No Man's Sky, they aren't coming back. After fudgy up the launch as monumentally as they did, having updates like this only trickling out months after the fact, just doesn't cut it.

You're wrong. The community has gotten stronger since the last update and Survival mode spawned thousands of vids with thousands of views. Unless you're a part of the community you're unlikely to know that so it's understandable you believe what you believe. It's a great game now and people are very happy with it.

No, it's an echo chamber of fans who already liked the game.
These patches help keep them happy but they don't bring back people who were significantly disappointed at launch.

Stats don't go back farther but I remember when the first patch dropped it was around 10k for a bit. Compare that to the ~200k at launch.

I doubt Hello Games expects to bring in many new players with anything past the Foundation update. That one got a lot of news because Sean had disappeared and nobody knew what was happening. This update and anything to follow will be just to improve the game for those who remain.
I'm all for new content and new modes of transport but there HAS to be a motive other than going through the motions of attaining the blue prints, amassing the ingredients and building said transport. At the end of the day it all comes down to the planet/galaxy/universe procedural generation.
We need unique, one off features on planets that are only found rarely
We need more variety of creatures with a bigger variety of behaviours
We need far more types of flora, some of which (again) only appear once in a blue moon
We need new features for caves like ice, lava, pitch darkness, more dangers
We need cave specific content to give us a reason to investigate them thoroughly
We need creatures that protect very rare caches of rare materials
We need villages and camps populated by different tribes, some bad, some good.
We need themed planets: Gothic, fantasy, mysterious etc.
There are many things they could add that would make exploration interesting. Although all of the above seem to suggest they're playing to the idea of staying in one place, I don't think that would be the case. I would be landing on every planet and exploring every solar system if I knew there were unique things to be found and experienced. As it stands at the moment I often just fly over a planet and immediately know what to expect. Give me the unexpected.
And don't just give us the blue prints randomly, make us have to work for them through quests and the such.
lol why bother. Might as well move on to their next project and hope it fares better. Why would you even want to explore planets? It's all so fudgy ugly.

Doesn't sound too bad but will be interesting to see how the things are actually implemented.
Shops/Merchants basically already exist unless they're doing something more with them.
Meaningful ship classes were one of the marketed features so that'd be cool to add them.

I'm more interested in the improved graphics to be honest. I play the game to explore and having more variety in topography and environments is welcome.
If those graphics are on ps4 pro then WOW that looks a lot better now!
And nice blue skies! Was there ever any planets that had blue skies like that? i have never found any.

I doubt that's what improved graphics means. It's probably optimizations on the tech side of things to increase LOD distances, improve texture filtering, etc.
Yeah I'm definitely gonna have to jump back in on this after this update. Just play it here and there. A land vehicle should have been there at launch, but at least we are getting it now. Also the 4k output should look great and the new lighting and AO effects should help with the image a lot.
Also those plants on that planet when they were driving around were so cool. Never came up on anything like those before so maybe they are new. unless someone else has seen them before.

Yeah, I've seen them before. I really hope they've added new types of creatures and plants but I'm happy about this update though.
Buggy looks like it has pretty good handling. Overall seems like a good continuation of the pathfinder update, although it's funny that both updates are primarily focused on taking the game in a completely different direction than what the original game attempted.

Yeah it's weird, but I like it though.

The graphical updates look very nice. This is a huge update and it seems they made finding your home/base planet easier if you travel far.

I think it's just a redownload of the Pathfinder patch with fixes. Vehicles can now be driven on any planet (I don't like this idea) and there are little fixes like being able to transfer items straight from your vehicle to your suit.

The Pathfinder patch was also bloated, same with every patch beforehand. Excluding the music added, nothing should be taking that much file space. Just amuzing how bad it is with this patch.
Why don't you like driving on any planet? That's something that I definitely like is changed.

Everything was balanced perfectly with the two previous updates. It all came together in Survival mode and Permadeath mode. Those things that didn't seem to make sense suddenly had merit and it was clear Survival mode was meant to be how the game was original played. You suddenly found yourself opening all the boxes, buying provisions for your journey, upgrading your suit and ship, because it 'mattered' and without doing so, the game was difficult. It gave us agency.
Now those suit upgrades have lost some of their purpose and the hazards on planets can be circumvented quite easily. The vehicles have replaced ALL of that and now allow us to wonder these dangerous environments with relative ease, the only real problem (which has now just become an annoyance) is the whip plants that you accidentally run over while using the vehicles. We need to be punished in some way for taking the 'easy way out'. There needs to be a trade off between traversal on foot and on wheels. There has to be a reason to use both or to choose one over the other.
Hopefully Hello Games can find a way of giving us a reason for that choice. I think we shouldn't just be able to call up our vehicles as we please for instance, and something needs adding that makes it an exciting moment when you stumble across the opportunity to use them; something that makes a long trek on foot rewarding but necessary. I'd suggest 'calling stations' that aren't found by scanning. When you come across such a rare 'calling station' you CAN call your vehicle, but it needs to cost units, preferably the new units they introduced. This gives walking a reason, collecting units a reason and makes finding these rare 'calling stations' a sense of excitement. Vehicles should also be subject to the same conditions suits are, albeit a little more robust.
New patch notes. Hopefully it releases soon:
Optimised HBAO so that it runs faster
Added an option to lock framerate on PS4 to 30 fps to keep the frame rate stable
Sentinel drones now investigate correctly when in a vehicle
Fixed a rare bug that could cause players to fall through the floor when exiting a ship
Fixed texturing issue in freighter bases
Fixed and inventory exploit when purchasing multiple ships in a freighter that allows you to duplicate your ship's inventory
Fixed a bug that causes freighters to be too cheap
You can no longer build the Exocraft Terminal in freighter bases, this prevented players from being able to complete the vehicle missions
Fix for ships spawning on top of each other
Fixed a crash in physics
Fixed a crash resulting from running out of memory
Improved vehicle audio
Fix for certain UI elements having over-saturated colours in HDR
Fix for font anti-aliasing in HDR
Improved performance of UI rendering in HDR
Fix for HDR rendering being dark on some TV models
Fixed a visual issue with the T-shaped corridor
Added error messaging for failed uploads to Steam Workshop
Colossus camera is now slightly further back when moving at speed
Exocraft mining lasers are now easier to aim up
Increased yield from Autonomous Field Mining Units
Fixed issue with Colossus Exocraft's wheels sinking through the ground
Adjust colossus collision to make it harder to go underground
Enable Steam Controller in base reporting and Steam Workshop base upload
The animation when exiting the Colossus is improved
Exocraft mining laser uses less fuel but is less effective in combat
Fixes for the white sphere that shows when at the photo mode boundary
Fix for ladders vanishing in bases
Fixed a crash when uploading and downloading bases using Steam Workshop
Default to frame lock on for PS4 and off for PS4Pro
Fixed an issue caused when dieing in permadeath with the inventory screen open
Fixed a bug causing poor performace when in a vehicle near predator creatures
New patch now LIVE
It's so much harder to progress now ... and I love it. I think part of the problem was people burning through the new content too quickly and then having to wait for another update for more to do. This update has made the game feel meatier, with better balance. When you upgrade your ship/suit/gun you get a better sense of 'achievement' and when you finally get a decent gun/ship, it feels well earned. The new currency and shops have also allowed them to add other equipment and upgrades easily and the fact you have an R1/L1 scroll button but only ever get one page of new upgrades, shows quite clearly that's exactly what they intend to do.
I think the next update is either going to be environmental or to do with space exploration. All I want right now is a few new topographical features, a better variation in caves, and more animals with improved AI/animations. I'll be honest, one more substantial update like the Foundation/Pathfinder updates, and I'd be willing to pay something for any subsequent DLC, providing it was priced reasonably. Free would be better of course, but I wouldn't be annoyed in the least if it wasn't.
A few extra little touches and features I'd like to see added:
1: The down menu should be sticky so it remembers what I did last. Great for photo mode or space battles when you need to replenish your shields.
2: NPCs should mill about on Bases, on Space stations or Freighters.
3: Sentinel should stop and communicate with one and other before going about there business
4: More whether effects such as lightening and thunder.
5: The tiny white Sentinal you see on Freighters should be available for purchase as an on land buddy, with extra fire power and extra storage.
NMS is now going places. I actually envy anyone who is just now getting on board.
New patch is out:
Greetings explorers,
Today we're releasing Patch 1.24, which addresses some remaining issues and bugs players have reported since the launch of the Path Finder Update. This update is live now on both PC and PS4, and the patch notes are as follows:
-Fixed an issue that caused player's bases not to appear
-Optimised light shafts, allowing us to enable them on PS4
-Fixed a game freeze/lock up that could occur when in space
-Improved frame rate when playing with unlocked frame rate, or vsync disabled
-Fixed some issues with Steam controller prompts
-Various minor performance optimisations
-Fixed some rare crashes & freezes
Thanks to everyone who has been playing and providing feedback/bug reports! If you continue to experience issues, you can report them via our Help Centre.
Hello Games
Tempted to dip back in. Have they patched in an ending yet?

No, but it's worth dipping back in. Play on Survival mode. I just spent a quick ten minutes playing for 5 hours.
It's getting better. I need another year of updates and a $10 sale price and I'll jump in. Might even be free on ps plus someday.

I never liked survival mode in any game. I need to feel like I'm working towards something and that's why having no ending put me completely off.

There is an end but it's about 255 galaxies away. Just get it and enjoy the 'knocking about'. I've just finished playing since my last comment and had no idea it was 08:45 UK time. It's addictive once you just forget about other things and enjoy the gaming loop.
There's lots of things to do. You can finish the Atlas path (which is an 'end' if that's what you want.) You can finish the Foundation/Pathfinder content (which is another 'end') or you can get to the next galaxy (which is also an 'end' to the galaxy you're in). But the draw of the game is the searching and exploration. You'll be able to pick it up pretty cheaply now, especially if you buy it second hand, and with more content coming, there will be plenty to do.
Just play on normal until you come to grips with what you need to craft for what situation, and get used to the mechanics. When you're comfortable, THEN play Survival or even Permadeath, the mode I'm currently playing. I nearly copped it earlier when I took on two pirates but just managed to squeeze by. It's quite scary when you know you only have ONE chance.

Just get it. There's a great community building around it now and more and more people are starting to enjoy it for what it is. A good 90% of older players are now satisfied with what it has to offer. DO IT!
edit: Sod it, I'm off back on it. I can't sleep and I have a freighter to save for.

I already have it and pumped a few hours in before losing interest. This was before any major patches though.

There you go then. Just start a new save though, the game feels much different now, especially in Survival mode ...

yeah i think the only way ill play this if its free on PS+

No chance. I have too many games to play. I always said from day one it was an indie game and I'd pay an indie price. Maybe in the summer when I've less to play.
But you know I've already got it. We've had a few conversations over it.
I thought you'd probably sold it by now. I never keep games I've finished and don't intend to play again. I played another 5 hours after my last post. :)

I bought it digital. Plus I don't sell games.

I'm never going to buy a AAA priced game digitally. My games tend to cost me about $20 - £25 just because I always sell older games to get them.

I tend to look at the cheapest price at retail and see how much cheaper it is compared to digital. If there isn't much difference I more than often buy digital. Never bought a game over 50 quid though. Btw stop appearing offline on PS4 :-P

It's the same non-ending after the 256th galaxy too. Can't remember if it looped back to the first galaxy or if it repeated the last galaxy.

It loops to the next galaxy and I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated it. I did it five times in fact, and I'm looking forward to doing it again. It's very Zenish.

Yeah after each galaxy it goes to the next, but the last galaxy doesn't have an end either. It loops to a previous one.
I wish the different galaxies had wildly different parameters for the procedural generation. Lots of things they could do for NMS 2/a patch.

YUp. On PC it's pretty easy to cheat by either increasing ship stats or just teleporting. Nothing is coded uniquely for the last galaxy.
THis was way back at launch so by now I'm sure some speedrunners have made it to the end without cheats.

Oh, right. Yeah, I suppose it would be nice for Hello Games to code in some 'ending' for those who like to feel they've completed a game. Personally, I didn't buy it to complete, I bought it to play but to each there own as they say. It's like Minecraft for me. I never even considered finishing that game and don't really think it's designed for that purpose, although (obviously) there IS an end if you so wish.
How about contributing to my photo thread? Come on!

I don't have the game. The PC's delayed release and glitchy launch made me miss out on the hype zeitgeist so now it's in my purchase backlog.
I agree with you about the need for an ending. A traditional ending cutscene wouldn't fit well with No Man's Sky.

The thing is, I saw what I got as 'an end' and it actually satisfied me in a way other games don't.
Yeah, the ending/no ending thing is kinda the tricky thing that I've thought about a lot.
Having a definable ending generally helps a game because it gives you something to do, but some games are intended to have freedom and a definable ending would generally get in the way of that.
I have mentioned all this before, but ideally these types of games seem like they should have objectives to keep playing.
But I think it'd need to have like really awesome unique objectives that get generated.
Seems like either some crazy clever procedural generation or AI thing would have to be figured out.
Simple quality of life additions that we need. Things that wouldn't unbalance the game:
1: To set a way point, please make is so we also need to hit 'X' while looking through the visor. I'm really fed up with accidentally setting waypoints when all I want to do is scan creatures or take a look around.
2: Make Rigogen yield 8-10 instead of 4-5. A small adjustment but 'come on now'.
3: Grey out all the upgrades we install instead of removing them from the list. How many times have people deleted an upgrade from a newly bought ship in order to place it better only to find they didn't have it?
4: Give us a gridded menu that we can access anywhere to check what we can build at our base and what ingredients we need to build it.
Exosuit/Starship/Multitool/Freighter/Base.
5: Please let me walk and run a tad faster. I'm not asking for much, just a 'tad'.
6: When crafting in your ship, if you have enough ingredients, simply holding 'X' will continue crafting until you have 5. (10 in your freighter if you can craft there. I haven't tried it, so I don't know).

Extra, extra Bonus: Is this a bug because it looks purposeful to me and I'd love this to be something that could happen occasionally. This is weird behaviour for NPC ships but just look at what they do and how it all seems programmed. Is this perhaps one of the reasons there are now more options for our weapons? Could it be ramped up in the next update? Note how the ships stop and hang in mid air. The thrusters stop and then they right themselves and move on, as if deliberately animated that way:

dang that is pretty cool. I hope we start to get more and more creatures that are like that. And hopefully they can start getting in those big dog dinosaurs from the E3 demo.
